Equity and Justice Grants: Funded Projects

2007 Grant RecipientsThe Center for Women and Enterprise, Boston, MA, received $5,000 in support of “Renewal House Financial Literacy nd Visioning Project.” Our grant helped provide training in financial literacy and goal-setting for residents of Renewal House, a UU Urban Ministry program for women in crisis.
East Fort Worth (TX) Montessori School and the African Descent Caucus of Diverse and Revolutionary UU Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM), received $3,000 for “Early Childhood Education and Advocacy in Sierra Leone.” Our grant supported the Mother’s Union of Sierra Leone in establishing a model early childhood education and support program for girls at risk.
Mujeres Iniciando en las Americas, Cost Mesa, CA, received $5,500 to support “Sexual Harassment Commercial #1,” radio spots in Spanish and Qui’che providing information about sexual harassment and domestic violence, as well as information about where those affected can obtain help.
Unitarian Universalist Church of the Philippines, received $5,845 in support of set-up costs for “Buhata Pinay (Do It, Filipina!),” an organization providing services and livelihood projects aimed at empowering and educating Filippine women.
Unity Church Aiding Neighbors, a program of Unity Church UU, North Easton, MA, received $5,000 to support its “English Language Learners Program,” which will provide English language, life skills English, and citizenship courses to low income residents (mostly women) of the Greater Brockton, MA, area.

2006 In 2006, $15,000 was distributed to four projects:
Carbondale (IL) Unitarian Fellowship was awarded $5,000 to support their project, “Busy Bees of Kabwe, Zambia Workshop,” which helps AIDS affected women in Zambia provide for themselves and their families. Our grant funded construction of a new building to house this handicrafts collective, as well as purchase of an additional sewing machine.
Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers, FL, and the Florida Migrant Interstate Program were given a $2,500 matching grant for “Mira Mama – Radio Public Service Announcements on Human Trafficking.” The sponsors of this project raised the matching funds within two months.
Unitarian Universalist Women & Religion was awarded $5,000 to support the “Cakes for the Queen of Heaven Republication Project,” which will bring this ground-breaking adult religious education curriculums learnings on the scared feminine to a new generation of UUs.
The Church of the Larger Fellowship – Unitarian Universalist received $2,500 to support their program “Hope Not Hell: Building a UU Women’s Prison Ministry.” Directed by the Rev. Patty Franz, this project is bringing a liberal religious message of hope to incarcerated women in a number of U.S. prisons. |
2005 To demonstrate the types of projects our new program would fund, in 2005 the UUWF Board of Trustees awarded a special, $4,000 pilot grant to Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom, a program of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. SYRF promotes interaction and activism among pro-choice students, young adults, clergy, and religious leaders of all faiths. Our grant supported activities like the Student Summit.
